Analysis of the Couette Flow by Means of the New Direct-Simulation Method

By use of the new direct-simulation method, the exact nmnerical solution of theCouette-flow problem is obtained over the whole range of the Knudsen number.(The wall Mach number is 3.0) By comparing the obtained solution with theapproximate six-moment solution, the accuracy of the latter is examined indetail : as to the flow velocity and shearing stress, the six-moment solution showsreasonable agreement with the simulation solution ; as to the temperature, density,and heat flux, the error of the six-moment solution is fairly large in all flowregimes except the near-continuum one; as to the pressure, it is not uniform inthe transition-flow regime, differently from the prediction of the six-momentsolution.
