Particle Modeling of the Electrical Discharge in the Upper Atmosphere above Thundercloud(Gases, Plasmas and Electric Discharges)

We present a particle model for investigating the dynamics of the electrical discharge referred to as "sprite halo" in the upper atmosphere above thundercloud. Based on the solution of quasi-electrostatic (QE) field, we apply the Monte Carlo collision scheme for simulating sprite halos produced by the sudden removal of thundercloud charge (e.g., a lightning discharge). The particle simulation is applied at the altitude over 60km in which electron conductivity governs the total conductivity. The charges of 200C, 250C and 300C are assumed as removed from thundercloud at an altitude of 5km within 1 ms. The present model demonstrates the electron energy distribution with a high-energy tail as consistent with the previous theoretical deduction. The simulation results are in good agreement with the observations and the theoretical research.
