A theoretical study is made of the force on a spherical rigid particle sedimentingwith a constant velocity U in a viscous fluid outside of a vertical circular cylinder. Results are obtained up to the first-order effects of the boundary usixag the methodof matched asymptotic expansiouas. The lateral force experienced by the spheretends to (63/64)n"jtUaK./logr. as r.ecc. Here, a detaotes the radius of thesphere, jt the viscosity, r? the distautce from the cyliutder axis to the positiota ofthe sphere, and R. the Reyuaolds number based on the radius of the sphere. Onthe contrary, the correction to the drag out the sphere due to wall effect tends to(189/64)n'pUae7(r. log r.) as r.=co, age beiuag the radius of the cylinder.
