Lateral migration of a solid spherical particle suspended in a fluid flowing ina circular tube is investigated theoretically on the basis of a method developedby Cox and Brenner (Chem. Eng.Sci.23(1968) 147) and Green's function of theStokes equation for a circular tube obtained by Hasimoto (J. Phys. Soc. Jpn. 41([976) 385). Buoyant and neutraJ]y buoyant particles in PoiseuiJle flow areconsidered as well as a sedimenting particle in a quiescent fluid. The resultsobtained agree well with the known experiments. When the velocity of the particleis about twice as fast as the mean velocity of the fluid, there are two stable equi-librium positions.
