Numerical Analysis on the Motion of Gas Bubbles Using Level Set Method

In this parper, we stttdy the behavior of' gas btrbbles rising throtrgh a viscotrs liqtrid in a verticalsquare duct ntrtaaerically. The level set fornatrlation developed by Strsstaaan et at. is successfullygeneralized for three-dinaensional incormpressible txvo-phase floxvs incltrding large density andviscosity ratios as well as surface tension effect. Ntuuner'ical sinatrlations are carried out for gas-liquid flows with difl'erent ratios of density. It is shown tlaat the effect of variation of the densityratio on the btrbble shape and the flow field is extrenaely weak when the ratio is larger thanl:50. The sumtrlatuons of flows with a single btrbble in a dtrct are also carried ottt to investigatethe inlltmence of tlae dtrct walls on the flow field. It is clarified that the bubble shape and therising velocity strongly depend LlpOIl the rartio of' 21 dtrct width to an initi?tl btrbble r?tdius, butthat there is laardly tlae effect of the ratio on the rising velocity when it exceeds ten. Finally,we present a nttznerical restuJt on the interaction of two bulclcles. The restrlt is in qualitativelyagreement with previotus experimental data.
