Temperature Dependence of Complecx Dielectric Constant of TGS Powders

The real part ,z and the imaginary part a" of the complex dielectric constant ofTGS powders have been measured precisely at I kHz as functions of temperaturefrom 40'C to 58'C. Powders separated into different particle sizes using sievesranging from 25 jtvn to 210 jtm in mesh size were used as specimens. A well definedpeak of a' at 49'C (7'.), indicating ferroelectric phase transition, was observed onthe specimen with particle size less than 25 jtm, as well as on the specimens withlarger particle sizes. The thickness of the nonferroelectric surface layer should befar smaller than 20 pne, the thickness reported by Mansingh and Bawa. Bothcomponents of the complex dielectric constant showed remarkable particle sizedependence. Behaviors of ,z and ,zz below T. are explained by considering thedomain wall motion, and the origin of a" above T. is attributed to the ionicconduction.
