The crystal structure of Rb.ZnC]. was determined at several temperaturesin the normal phase by using X-ray reflection data collected by an automaticfour-circle diffractometer. The /7-K.S0. type structure with large thermal am-plitudes was obtained. The split-atom method reveals that the ZnCl. group lieswith equal probability in two equilibrium arrangements. In addition to thedisordered motion, softening of a rotational motion of the ZnCl. group is sug-gested from the temperature variation of thermal vibrations. The magnitudeof the thermal amplitude gives an information about the mechanism of the phasetransition in the /7-K.S0. type ferroelectrics.
