A field experiment was conducted to examine the difference in the bleeding rate during the panicle formation stage (PFS) i.e., young panicle formation stage (YPS : 1-2 mm young panicle), 10 d later from YPS (lOd LYPS), and at heading among 15 cultivars with different plant types and grain sizes belonging to indica, japonica, and javanica rice ecospecies. The relation between the sink size and physiological root activity in terms of bleeding rate was investigated. The stem weight decreased proportionally with the increase in the number of stems per hill, and cultivars with a higher number of stems showed a lighter stem weight and lower stem bleeding rate. The hill bleeding rate was positively correlated with the stem bleeding rate during PFS. A strongly negative significant relationship was observed between the bleeding rate per stem and the number of stems per hill. A higher dry weight was associated with a higher stem bleeding rate at YPS, lOd LYPS, and heading among the cultivars. Similar results were obtained for N and the stem bleeding rate at heading. Cultivars with a higher bleeding rate contained a higher amount of total sugar in the leaf sheath plus culm. These facts suggested that the difference in the stem bleeding rate among cultivars might depend on the difference in stem size associated with root traits, such as number of crown roots and their diameter, etc. The stem bleeding rate at YPS, lOd LYPS, and heading or the average bleeding rate during PFS was correlated with the number of spikelets per panicle but not with the hull weight. The hull weight was closely and positively correlated with the bleeding rate per spikelet. The stem bleeding rate during PFS was significantly related to the sink size due to its significant association with the number of spikelets but not with the hull weight directly. Higher bleeding rate might be mainly associated with a higher amount of N and dry matter which led to the increase in the number of spikelets.
