Chemotaxonomic studies and physiological tests were carried out in representative strains of nocardioform actinomycetes, isolated from compost made from city refuse. The cultures contained meso-diaminopimelic acid but lacked LL-diaminopimelic acid, glycine, arabinose and galactose in the cell walls. None of the sugars that are important for the diagnosis (xylose, galactose, arabinose, madurose) were found in the whole cell hydrolysates. These contained phosphatidyl choline as a characteristic nitrogenous phospholipid. They were found to have a menaquinone system, comprising ten isoprene units with varying degree of dehydrogenation. According to these chemotaxonomic characteristics and results of physiological tests, organisms of this group were identified as Nocardiopsis dassonvillei.
