Nature of actinomycete population in soil, to which compost made from city refuse had been applied, was investigated. Actinomycetes were isolated by using selective media and composition of actinomycete flora in soil and in compost was examined, respectively. None of the isolates from compost included streptomycetes, whereas about 90% of the isolates from soil belonged to the genus Streptomyces. Actinomycetes similar to those found in compost were not isolated from soil except just after compost application. Percentage of chromogenic streptomycetes to total streptomycete isolates, which was 61% in soil to which only inorganic fertilizers had been applied and 75% in composted soil just before application of compost, decreased to 30% after application of compost. St. phaeochromogenes, the most frequently recorded species in this soil, accounted for about 30% of the total streptomycete population. However, the proportion of St. phaeochromogenes in soil decreased to 75% after addition of compost. Most of the other streptomycete species, however, were isolated only once in this experiment.
