Dental prostheses for patients after radiotherapy of the head and neck

The goal of radiotherapy for malignant tumors of the head or neck is complete elimination of the tumor and the preservation of form and function. However, because many patients seeking radiotherapy are elderly and have missing teeth, in many cases form and function are already compromised. For such patients, dental prostheses that restore form, function and aesthetics are indispensable after radiotherapy. However, complications associated with radiotherapy often make the use of dental prostheses difficult. Although post-treatment prosthetic dentistry has become more predictable with improvements in radiation technology in recent years, no detailed surveys or reports have been published. We fabricated maxillary and mandibular dentures for a patient who underwent radiotherapy for malignant melanoma that had been diagnosed histopathologically. We report here the patient's experience after using the prosthesis for six months. We concluded that when a prosthesis is placed in a patient who has received radiation therapy, there must be no overextensions or occlusal disharmonies, and it is important that the fit is precise and the adjustments are accurate.
