Phase behaviors of cubic mesogens, ANBC and BABH, are discussed while paying a special attention to the role of the alkoxy chain of the molecule. The resemblance between the phase diagram of the binary systems, ANBC(n_C)-n-tetradecane (n_C = 16 and 18) and the n_C dependence in a series of neat ANBC's suggests that the alkoxy chain behaves like the solvent in lyotropic liquid crystals. The analysis of entropy of transition between SmC and isotropic mesophases clearly shows that the arrangement of "molecular" cores has a higher degree of order in isotropic mesophases than in SmC phase whereas the terminal alkoxy chains have a higher degree of disorder. The disorder relative to the SmC phase assesed in terms of the entropy per methylene group is very similar between the isotropic mesophases of the two mesogens, implying identical nature of the D phase of ANBC and the cubic phase of BABH.
