Chapter 3 A Way to 3D Numerical Relativity

Emission of strong gravitational waves is expected in the last three milliseconds of coalescence of binary neutron stars or black holes. In this phase, analytic or semi-analytic studies are not so powerful since full nonlinear and dynamical treatment of matter and space-times are needed. General relativistic effects are very important when two stars finally merge into a single black hole. Moreover the event is completely three-dimensional so that large-scale numerical calculations are required. Numerical relativity is the unique method for studying such nonlinear phase of coalescence. As a first step of studying coalescing binary neutron stars, we performed simulations using post-Newtonian hydrodynamics including radiation reaction of gravitational waves. They must give a lot of perspectives on coalescing events and gravitational radiation from coalescing events. Next we started to attack 3D, fully relativistic simulations. Since the complete use of powerful supercomputers must be made to succeed in the challenge, we will discuss methods of numerical methods using vector-parallel supercomputers in detail.
