The Duality Theory and Weak Antiferromagnetism of Heavy Fermions

A review is given on the duality theory which describes strongly correlated electron systems with account of dichotomy between itinerant and localized characters. As a specific application, the weak antiferromagnetism of heavy fermion systems is discussed. Two kinds of weak antiferromagnetism are identified according as the f electrons participate or do not participate in the Fermi surface of heavy fermions. Competition between formation of the Kondo singlet and that of the crystal-field singlet is suggested to be the key aspect of the magnetic phase transition in URu_2Si_2. It is argued that the weak antiferromagnetism of URu_2Si_2 originates from polarization of the crystal-field singlet together with nesting of the Fermi surface of conduction electrons.
