A Model of the Nucleon and the P_<11> Resonance as a Bound State of a Hidden Channel

A simple model is proposed for the nucleon and the P_<11> resonance, which explains the main features in the P_<11> state of the _<π>N channel. It is indicated that the large inelasticity of the P_<11> state is not the origin of the resonance but the result of it. It is assumed in this model that there is a hidden channel involving a strongly bound state and its coupling to the _<π>N channel generates the two particle states. The nucleon appears as if it were an elementary particle, provided only the _<π>N channel is considered. Analyses are based on a decomposition of a partial wave amp´itude into two parts, one representing a particle part and the other a background part. As to this point it is shown that an argument by Michael on the S_<11> state is not necessarily correct.
