The Ward-Takahashi identities are derived for connected Green's functions in quantum electrodynamics without recourse to equa1-time com mutation relations, field equations and the Feynman-Dyson perturbation expansions. The argument is based on the dispersion formulation of field theories and only finite expressions are used throughout this derivation. These identities are shown to be consequences of the subtraction conditions imposed upon the 2-, 3- and 4-point Green's functions.
