We investigate the possibility of spontaneous μ-e mass splitting in the framework of the unified theory of weak and electromagnetic interactions. Various types of symmetry elements are added to the u-e symmetric gauge model Lagrangian and we examine whether they can give rise to the spontaneous μ-e mass splitting subject appropriate constraints. A model with a non-abelian gauge symmetry is shown to give rise to a finite and calculable mass difference.
