The main purpose of this research is to investigate 1) elements that account for the difference in students' TOEIC scores and, 2) elements that affect their gains in TOEIC scores over a six-month period. In order to identify these elements, we examined 2 types of variables. The first type of variable focuses on motivation : (1) Integrative Motivation, and (2) Instrumental Motivation. The second type of variable focuses on the intercultural sensitivity scale : (1) Avoidance, (2) Ethnocentrism and, (3) Ethnorelativism. Ninety-nine observations were collected at Aomori Public College in 2000. The results of data analysis (two regression models) indicated that "Integrative Motivation" accounted for the differences in the participants' TOEIC scores and positively affected their gains in TOEIC scores. These findings suggest that students need to be introduced to a target culture and to become interested in a country of the target language in order to enhance their integrative motivation in studying English.
