The sluggish economy of Japan over the past decade has accelerated the shift of employment practices of a large number of Japanese companies from conventional practices based on seniority-based compensation and life-long employment to meritoriented practices of employment. This study examines the degree to which the meritoriented practices of employment affects two conservative aspects of Japanese culture. A questionnaire survey was conducted during April and May 1999 to collect 1032 observations from four groups who were related to an institution : male college students (n=227), female college students (n=186), their fathers (n=297) and their mothers (n=322). Statistical analysis of the data suggests that a tradition-oriented lifestyle of Japanese culture remain unaffected, while the shift of employment practices attenuates a protectionism of the Japanese economy. Overall, the Japanese maintain their tradition-oriented conventional lifestyle in spite of the shift.
