Moving picture is usually recorded on movie film, video tape, video casette tape and laser discs. Such sequential access media is unsuitable for future theater which has many personal booth and many program sources for free time starting service. Semiconductor memory such as VLSI can be apllied for this purpose. Moving picture can be stored in the VLSI memory after analog to digital converting, and can be randomly accessed. If the media of moving pictures such as movies can be randomly accessed, many people can see the same movie at each booth from each starting time when they reach the theater. But the quantity of digitized data of a moving picture is extremely larger than that of analog data, so that a very high efficiency data compression technique is required. A method for data compression of digital moving picture by Time Axis Run Length method for future movie theaters was proposed ahd the result of its fundamental experiment using the digital moving picture data base SIDBA made by University of Tokyo was reported.
