The characteristics of moisture content and permeability of unsaturated soils are studied through the desaturation experiments using a vertical sand column, and a method for identifying the unsaturated permeability is developed based on the unsaturated seepage analysis. The major conclusions are summarized as follows : (1) The moisture content characteristics of drained sands can be closely represented by the Brooks-Corey type approximate function. There exist regular relationships between airentry pressure Ψ_a, irreducible saturation S_r and the constant a in the approximate function. (2) The change of permeability with desaturation can be identified by an inverse analysis of the Rechards type flow equation through the amount of accumulative discharge. (3) The unsaturated permeability identified by the proposed method showed a good agreement with the results of the air-pressurized unsaturated permeability tests and the instantaneous moisture content measurement tests.
