A practical method for analyzing the land subsidence phenomena in multi-aquifer-aquitard system due to pumping is developed. The proposed approach combines the two-dimensional groundwater flow analysis for aquifers and the one-dimensional vertical consolidation analysis for aquitards with the accommodation of the leaky aquifer concept in multiple-aquifer system. A solution approach for the governing flow and consolidation equations is presented based on the IADI method which expends less computer storage and computation time. An example is given of the application describing land subsidence in a hypothetical double-layered aquifer-aquitard system. The results indicate that the proposed method can serve as an efficient means for predicting the progress of subsidence in multiple-layered ground.
