A unified model for analyzing the flow through deformable porous media on variably saturated conditions has been presented. The governing equation developed in this paper is premised on a multi-dimensional flow field and a one-dimensional strain field undergoing simultaneous desaturation and deformation. The equation was solved subsequently by the alternating direction implicit finite difference procedure for a simple hydrogeological model as the quantitative demonstration. The transient changes of pressure head, moisture content, position of phreatic surface, deformation of soil skeleton and quantity of discharge induced by the drawdown of drainage level in the model embankment were examined. The solution approach employed here is straightfoward compared with the finite element method if geometrical configulation is not complex.
