The hydromechanical behavior of sodium silicate solution, which is widely used for grouting purpose, was investigated through laboratory experiments. The flow and permeability characteristics of the solution with various kinds of concentration were examined, and the occurrence of dispersion in seepage process was explored by means of electric conductivity measurement. The major conclusions obtained through this study are as follows : (1) The sodium silicate solution with the concentration to 40% (v/v) exhibits Newtonian fluid behavior. The dynamic viscosity of the solution increase curvilinearly with the rise of concentration. (2) The Darcy's law is applicable to the permeation of sodium silicate solution in soils. The permeability of soil for sodium silicate solution can be expressed rationally by introducing the intrinsic permeability. (3) The dispersive process of sodium silicate solution in soils can be evaluated by measuring the change of electric current. The coefficient of hydrodynamic dispersion for sodium silicate solution has a linear relationship with seepage velocity.
