The fundamental relationships between the properties of a porous medium like soils and the hydrodynamic properties of non-Newtonian fluids with a yield stress were derived on the basis of a Kozeny-Carman analysis; and a method for determining the permeability is developed. Laboratory grouting experiments using different kinds of suspension-type grouts were carried out to investigate the hydraulic gradient at the onset of flow and the successive process of permeation. Based on both theoretical and experimental investigations, the seepage mechanism of non-Newtonian grouts in soils is elucidated.
