Observation of Chaos in an Inhomogeneously Pumped Self-Pulsating Semiconductor Laser

Chaos was observed in an inhomogeneously excited self-pulsating semiconductor laser under periodic current modulation. By varying the dc bias, it was found that the laser changed its state from simple modulation at external frequency through quasi-periodicity to chaos. The presence of chaos and the route to chaos were simulated by a set of multimode rate equations incorporating the gain compression effect. This analysis revealed that the carrier storage associated with intracavity saturable absorber is responsible for the appearance of chaos in self-pulsating semiconductor lasers.
