We propose a method for noninvasive viscoelastic characterization of biological tissue using photoacoustic measurement. Since tissue viscoelasticity affects the propagation and attenuation of stress waves induced by laser irradiation, their decay times give the viscosity-elasticity ratio of the tissue. The decay times of laser-induced photoacoustic signals were compared with the intrinsic relaxation parameters measured using a conventional rheometer. When the density of a gelatin model was changed in the range of 5–25%, the decay times agreed well with the relaxation parameters, with a correlation coefficient of 0.90. We also applied this measurement method to tissue-engineered cartilage to confirm the usefulness of the viscoelastic evaluation.
