A long term study on the prognosis of asymptomatic hyperuricemia

One hundred and sixty-four asymptomatic hyperuricemic subjects(serum uric acid≥8.0mg/100ml) out of 4,150 male employees of a company were observed for periods of 60.9±36.9 months with respect to relative weight, acute gouty arthritis, proteinuria and urolithiasis. Their mean age and serum uric acid concentration were 49.0±4.7 years and 8.5±0.6mg/100ml, respectively. Their relative weight was 111.6±11.5%, showing a slight tendency of obesity in comparison with the overall population(105.9±12.3%). Acute gouty arthritis was observed in 5 cases (3.0%) with an annual incidence of 0.6%. There were 6 subjects (3.7%) with a past history of proteinuria, and 3 new cases of proteinuria were encounted during the present study, making a total of 9 cases (5.5%). Eight subjects (4.9%) had previously had urolithiasis, one of these plus 7 new cases, a total of 8 (4.9%), were diagnosed as urolithiasis during the study, making a total of 15 cases (9.1%). We conclude that subjects with asymptomatic hyperuricemia tend to be obese and show higher incidences of acute gouty arthritis, proteinuria and urolithiasis, than the reported incidences observed in general populations and consider some treatments warranted, such as diet and antihyperuricemic agents.
