The photocycloaddition reaction of 6-substituted phenanthridines and electron-rich olefins, such as <I>trans</I>-anethole and phenyl vinyl ether, is described. This reaction proceeds from the <SUP>1</SUP>(π,π<SUP>*</SUP>) states of 6-substituted phenanthridines <I>via</I> the exciplex to give azocine and/or azetidine derivatives in ethanol.
