The static magnetic susceptibilities of the stable cubane-type compounds of [Mo<SUB>4</SUB>S<SUB>4</SUB>]<SUP><I>m</I>+</SUP> with a set of consecutive oxidation numbers have been measured in the temperature range from 2 to 300 K at the field strength of 0.5 T. Na<SUB>3</SUB>[Mo<SUB>4</SUB>S<SUB>4</SUB>(edta)<SUB>2</SUB>]·10H<SUB>2</SUB>O (<I>m</I>=5) has been found to be paramagnetic with <I>S</I>=1⁄2, whereas Mg<SUB>2</SUB>[Mo<SUB>4</SUB>S<SUB>4</SUB>(edta)<SUB>2</SUB>]·22H<SUB>2</SUB>O (<I>m</I>=4) and Mg[Mo<SUB>4</SUB>S<SUB>4</SUB>(edta)<SUB>2</SUB>]·12H<SUB>2</SUB>O (<I>m</I>=6) to be diamagnetic. The electronic structure of the [Mo<SUB>4</SUB>S<SUB>4</SUB>]<SUP><I>m</I>+</SUP> clusters is discussed on the basis of the MO theory from the magnetic properties of these compounds.
