A 24-epimeric mixture of 24-methyl-19,29-dinorlanost-9(11)-en-3-one was synthesized from 24-methylenecycloartanol. The synthesis comprises acid-cleavage of the cyclopropane ring, 4β-demethylation, the Barton reaction of the 3-nitrile, dehydration of the 11β-hydroxy derivative, and oxidation of the 19-hydroxy derivative followed by photolysis.
