Treatment of guaioxide with <I>N</I>-bromosuccinimide gave 4-bromoguaioxide, which was dehydrobrominated to yield 3-dehydroguaioxide. The olefin was then converted into 8-deoxytorilolone and 8-deoxy-1-epitorilolone by the known procedures. Dehydration of these deoxy derivatives in benzene in the presence of <I>p</I>-toluenesulfonic acid gave 4,6-guaiadien-3-one and 1-epi-4,6-guaiadien-3-one, respectively.
