1,5,5,9-Tetramethyl-2-decalone (<B>6</B>) was synthesized from 5,5,9-trimethyl-1-decalone (<B>7</B>) and irradiated in <I>n</I>-hexane under a nitrogen atmosphere using a high pressure mercury lamp. Oxygen was passed through the reaction mixture in the dark to give a seco-nor acid, 1-carboxymethyl-2-ethyl-2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexane (<B>8a</B>) and a seco acid, 1-(2-carboxyethyl)-2-ethyl-2,6,6-trimethylcyclohexane (<B>9a</B>).
