A new carotenoid, ternstroemiaxanthin, was isolated as a main constituent from the red seeds of "<I>Ternstroemia japonica</I>," and the structure of the pigment was determined to be 3-hydroxy-β,ψ-caroten-18′-al (I) by spectral and chemical methods.
