Generation of olefin metathesis catalysts from W(CO)6 and group IVa metal halides under photochemical conditions.

• Irradiation of a solution of W(CO)<SUB>6</SUB> and group IV<SUB>a</SUB> metal halides in benzene by UV light gave the olefin metathesis catalysts, of which the combination W(CO)<SUB>6</SUB>–TiCl<SUB>4</SUB> was the most effective. Association of the coordinatively unsaturated W(CO)<SUB>5</SUB> and TiCl<SUB>4</SUB> was suggested to be a key step in the formation of a catalytically active complex. A survery was also made for other W(CO)<SUB>6</SUB>–MX<I><SUB>n</SUB></I> combinations for photo-generation of metathesis catalyst.
