(2-Pyridylmethoxy)calixarenes: New versatile ionophores for metal extraction.

(2-Pyridylmethoxy)calix[<I>n</I>]arenes (<I>n</I>=6,8) were newly synthesized. It was shown in two-phase solvent extraction that they can extract not only alkali metal cations but Cu<SUP>2+</SUP>, Ag<SUP>+</SUP>, and UO<SUB>2</SUB><SUP>2+</SUP> and are stable even at high pH. The results indicate that disadvantages of calixarene esters, which were previously developed as calixarene-based ionophores, can be improved by using the pyridyl group.
