Giant intra-articular tumors of the knee. A report of two cases.

We have experienced two cases of giant intra-articular tumor of the knee. Case 1 was a 77-year-old woman who had a mass in the intraarticular space of the right knee at surgery. The mass was considered as osteochondroma. Although it was difficult to decide the final histological diagnosis for the mass, it was most comfortably considered as ossification of infrapatellar fat pad by clinicopathological findings.Case 2 was a 70-year-old woman who had a mass in the same area as in case 1. The mass was attached to the synovial membrane in front of the anterior horn of the lateral meniscus. Histologically, the mass was almost consisted of cartilaginous tissue with arrangement of lobular pattern, in part of which was revealed the small area of enchondrall ossification and in the center was recognised the mucinous degeneration. Clinicopathologically, it was diagnosed as the synovial osteochondromatosis.
