Measurement of femoro-tibial torsion with computed tomography.

Femoro-tibial torsion was measured by Computed transverse tomography in both normal and osteoarthritic knees. The measurements were made in 10 individuals with normal knee and 13 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee. The patient was positioned supine with the knee extended. Tomograms were taken at four levels; femoral neck, femoral condyles, tibial condyles and malleoli. In addition to these, another four levels were chosen to determine the site of the tibial torsion; proximal 1/3, diaphysis, distal 1/3 and canopy of the ankle. Results showed that external rotation at the knee joint and the ankle to the femoral neck in osteoarthritic knee were not different statistically from normal knee. In osteoarthritis, lateral torsion at the femoral condyles and tibial condyles increased statistically. The most marked increase in tibial torsion was localized between tibial condyles and diaphysis.
