Diagnosis of Soft Tissue Tumors and Tumorous Conditions by Means of Needle Aspiration Biopsy

Needle aspiration biopsy has been supposed to increase the reliability of preoperative diagnosis of soft tissue tumors. From November 1982 until June 1983 in our hospital, 14 patients were examined with needle aspiration biopsy because of orthopedic soft tissue tumors and tunlorous conditions. Of 14 cases, 11 cases were soft tissue tumors and 3 cases were tumous conditions. Age distribution is from 12 to 64 years with an average of 38 years. Needles of 15-gauge with external diameter of approximately 1.8mm (surecut, TSK laboratry) were used. A diagnostic accuracy of the needle aspration biopsy was about 70%. The speciemens of soft tissue tumors such as lipoma, degenerative tissue and cystic lesion were difficult for aspiration and, nevertheless, diagnosis of other soft tissue tumors were well established. In short, the technique of the needle aspiration biopsy is simple with no complications and almost no risk. Diagnosis and surgical indication of soft tissue tumors can be well established by the needle aspiration biopsy.
