Follow-up study of Colles' fractures in the aged.

Between 1975 and 1986, sixty-two Colles' fractures in sixty old-aged patients were treated in our clinic. The patient' ages ranged from 65 to 87 years with an average being 71 years. Twenty-five patients who had twenty-six fractures were fresh cases, and thirty-five patients who had thirty-six fractures were old cases.All fresh cases were treated with manual reduction and fixed with plaster cast, but only one case was treated with neurolysis and resection of the bone fragment for the median nerve palsy. In fresh cases, we found that loss of reduction had happened to 46% of the cases especially in unstable cases.We studied 24 fractures clinically and compared that with radiological result. Satisfactorily functional results were obtained in spite of less satisfactorily anatomic results in old-aged patients.
