Comparative study of Clinical Results in Elderly Patients with Femoral Supracondylar Fractures.

Internal fixation of femoral supracondylar fractures is difficult. The purpose of our study was to compare the methed of internal fixation with clinical results achieved.Fifteen cases with femoral supracondylar fractures in patients aged over 65 years were selected for our study. Subjects included 7 males and 8 females, ranging in age from 65 to 85 years, with a mean of 74.6 years. Causes of the injury were a fall in 10 cases, traffic accidents in 4 cases, and one other.The internal fixation method was Küntscher nail with two malleolar screws in 6 cases, Ender nail in 4 cases, Condvlar elate in 3 cases and Zickel nail in 2 cases.We classified the results according to Stewart's classification: Excellent=0; Good=8; Fair=5; Poor=2.This study suggested that a Küntscher nail with two malleolar screws is adequate for treating this fracture.
