The evaluation of serum type III procollagen -N-peptide on fatty liver in obese patients.

Serum type III procollagen-N-peptide of 10 patients with fatty liver in obesity was measured by radioimmunoassay method by Rohde et al before and after treatment for fatty liver.To evaluate the diagnostic significance of serum PIIIP in fatty liver, the relationship between serum PIIIP and histological findings (steatosis, perivenular fibrosis and pericellular fibrosis) obtained by needle liver biopsy was examined.Compared to 3 patients with steatosis alone (group I, 8.9±2.7 ng/ml, mean±SD), the level of serum PIIIP in 7 patients with steatosis, perivenular and pericellular fibrosis (group II) was significantly elevated (21.5±7.2ng/ml) before treatment, however, the level of serum PIIIP in group II returned to normal after treatment.Serum PIIIP was thought to be a good marker for following the pericellular fibrosis with fatty liver in obesity.
