Study of liver disease in alcoholic patients.

In 200 alcoholic patients with various types of histologically determined liver disease, clinical features and the incidence of antibodies to alcohol altered hepatocyte plasma membrane were studied.<BR>In patients histologically diagnosed as chronic hepatitis, especially of an active type, and in patients with continued elevation of serum transaminase after abstinence, the incidence of positive HBsAg and positive history for blood transfusion and/or viral hepatitis was high.<BR>Their histological findings including piecemeal necrosis, periportal and intralobular round cell infiltration were compatible with those of viral chronic hepatitis. In these patients, compared with other types of alcoholic liver disease, the mean dany alcohol cosumption was lower and the incidence of antibody to alcohol altered hepatocyte plasma membrane was as low as 30% (3 of 10 cases). Therefore it was suspected that histologically determined chronic hepatitis in alcoholic patients was attributed mainly to hepatitis virus infection rather than prblonged immunological response to the hepatocyte caused by alcohol.
