Clinicopathological studies of ultrasonography in the space occupying lesion of the liver.

The ultrasonograms of the space occupying lesion of the liver were examined clinically and analyzed in 273 cases.A comparative study between the ultrasonograms in water bath and the histopathological findings of 34 specimens taken from patient recognized as having the space occupying lesions of the liver was undertaken.The ultrasonograms in 273 cases were classified into the 6 types (Type I-VI), which were furthermore divided to the 12 types including subtypes.The more coagulation necrosis was seen, the higher echo level was displayed, and the colliquative necrosis was anechoic. The massive fatty metamorphosis showed the same echo level as the liver, while the massive fibrosis gave low echo level. The peripheral sonolucent layer corresponded to the capsule-like fibrous tissue (2mm or more) without secondary degeneration, or to the combination of the tumor cell without necrosis and the capsule-like fibrous tissue in the case of the hepatocellular carcinoma.The layer corresponded to the tumor cell without necrosis, which is sometimes accompanied with fibrosis in the case of the metastatic tumor.The carvernous space showed the higher echo level than the liver and the hyaline degeneration showed the lower echo level in the cases of the high echo-level type of the carvernous hemangioma.
