Case report of primary biliary cirrhosis, followed over a period of 19 years.

Presented here is the case of a 57-year-old woman with biliary cirrhosis followed over a period of 19 years. She was admitted to our hospital to be examined for hypertension in 1965. Liver function abnormalities were found and a diagnosis of portal fibrosis with slight cell infiltration was made after an initial liver biopsy was performed. Fourteen years after her first admission, the patient underwent a cholecystectomy for a suspected gall bladder tumor and liver tissues were obtained.<BR>In 1980, positive antimitochondrial antibodies and increasing levels of serum bilirubin and IgM appeared and a third liver biopsy was performed. Histological findings indicated chronic nonsuppurative destructive cholangitis. In 1984 the patient died of pneumonia after being admitted for treatment of hepatic encephalopathy and was autopsied. This paper describes histological changes observed in the patient's liver in five samples, the results of liver-function tests over a period of 19 years, and changes in antimitochondrial antibodies.
