In order to improve the biocompatibility of zirconia, hydrothermal treatment was employed to modify the surface of yttria stabilized tetragonal zirconia (YSTZ). Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy showed the presence of hydroxyl group vibration for treated YSTZ. Static contact angle analysis revealed that the enhanced hydrophilicity of YSTZ via hydrothermal treatment. In vitro cell tests showed MG-63 osteoblast cell adhesion and proliferation were significantly improved on treated YSTZ compared with untreated. From these results indicated that hydrothermal treatment could be used to enhance the biocompatibility of zirconia bioceramics.
