Isolation of Free Radical Scavenger from Coptidis Rhizoma

By using an index of l,l-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl radical scavenging activity, a MeOH extract of Coptidis rhizoma (Oren in Japanese) was fractionated to give (+)-lariciresinol and p-hydroxyphenethyl trans-ferulate as free radical scavengers. These compounds also showed a superoxide dismutase-like activity. (+)-Lariciresinol showed a more potent superoxide radical scavenging than ascorbic acid.
