An acetone extract of Coptidis rhizoma (Oren in Japanese) gave Coptisine and 8-oxocoptisine when separated by using the inhibitory activity on ethanol-induced gastric lesions in rats as an index, which had a positive effect on gastric mucosal protection. The major constituents of the rhizoma, oxyberberine, berberine and palmatine failed to inhibit the formation of gastric lesion induced by ethanol.
