9-Acridone-2-sulfonic acid was shown to react specifically with superoxide to give chemi-luminescent light emission in an aqueous media as well as in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO). Thus, it supplements the non-specificity of Cypridina luciferin analogues to singlet molecular oxygen and the superoxide anion radical.
