An approach for general synthesis of biphenyl ncolignans by the reaction of 1-oxaspiro[4.5]-deca-6,9-diene-2,8-dione(3). (quinol-lactone) with the Grignard reagent 4 was explored. Among the biphenyl derivatives 6, 8, and 9 thus obtained, 6 was transformed to magnaldehyde B (2b) in three steps.
